A Note on the Piece

The Reset, After the Bang is perhaps the most quietly difficult moment in pickleball — and therefore the moment the Annex felt it could not avoid documenting. The piece captures the half-second following a hard drive at chest height, when the body still carries the momentum of expecting another bang and the mind has already chosen, against every available instinct, to refuse it.

The drill exists, in coaching terms, because the alternative is losing the point.

The work is rendered in the Annex's standard institutional house style: ink on paper, red-Sharpie corrections, masking-tape header, court diagram in three colors. The artist is the Coach. The Coach is not available for comment but has, on several occasions, indicated which part of the diagram contains the error.
